About Scottish
Highland Games
Competition served a variety of martial, sporting
and religious functions. The Clan Chiefs used them
to recruit staff. Winners of races made excellent
couriers and the strongest men made fine bodyguards.
The athletes and wrestlers, retained by rival chiefs,
were often matched in competition at important gatherings.
Also dancers and pipers were taken into the chief’s
household, not just for entertainment value, but for
the glory their prowess would reflect on there masters
on such occasions.
Today, Scottish Games are held in all parts of the
world where Scots, by birth or ancestry, have made
their homes. There are more than 500 Scottish games
and festivals around the world each year, including
more than 175 in the United States. Games are so popular
now in the United States that one or more games can
be attended somewhere in this country almost every
week of the year.
The games throughout the US generally include such
things as: heavy athletic competitions (28 and 58#
weight throw, stone and hammer throws, sheaf and caber
toss); music and dancing competitions/demonstrations
covering piping, fiddle, harp, Scottish country and
highland dancers; sheep dog herding demos and Scottish
dog/animal exhibits; individual clan tents and parading
of clan tartans; professional musical entertainment;
and vendors of various Scottish merchandise and foods.
Clan MacCord hosts a clan tent at many games across
the US. Family members and guests are invited to join
the local Clan MacCord convener at our clan tent for
viewing clan materials, purchasing clan merchandise,
socializing with other McCords and viewing the games
activities.
A schedule will be posted on this site early each
year listing the clan games across the US where Clan
MacCord will be hosting a clan tent along with other
details regarding the games.
