A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO MACCORD/MCCORD HISTORY

(“Mc” is an abbreviation of “Mac” and is used interchangeably)

For the dialect of the Scots language, see Ulster Scots language.

Surname Variations
The prefixes “Mac” and “Mc” both connote “son of”. Other variations of our
surname are; Cord, Corde, Courtney, Cuarta, MacChoard, MacChord,
MacCord, MacCorda, MacCorde, MacCourt, MacCourty,
MacCuiart, MacCuarta, Maolcuiart, McCord, McCorda, McCorde, McCort,
McCourt and others.

The Antiquity of Our Surname
The MacCord/McCord surname is an anglicized version of an ancient
Gaelic/Celtic name with connections to Scotland as well as Ireland.

McCord History from 1400 to 1600
The McCord family name history regarding McCords/MacCords/MacCourts
is based on well documented information placing the family in Ayrshire going
back to the Fifteenth century with lands owned by Clan Chief Nigel MacCord.
These MacCords were of Celtic ancestry and probably came to the Argyle
Scotland area from Northern Ireland as part of the DalRaida tribe in the Seventh

The majority of McCord families, here in the United States of America, are
seven or more generations from the first McCord arrivals in the then “New Colonial
